What Are Yak Cheese Chews? The Himalayan Dog Chew Explained
Posted by JARED CAHILL

Long before they became a dog chew, Himalayan herders made this hard cheese from yak milk. Here's how it's made and what to check before you buy.
If your dog destroys ordinary chews in minutes, you've probably seen yak cheese chews and wondered what they are. Here's what you're actually giving your dog.
A cheese with centuries of history
In the high Himalayas of Nepal, people have made a hard cheese called chhurpi for generations. It's dried until it's rock-hard and lasts for months without refrigeration, which matters at altitude. Locals still eat it as a long-lasting snack. The same cheese, made in larger pieces, turned out to be an excellent chew for dogs.
How it's made
Traditional chhurpi uses very few ingredients:
- Yak milk (often blended with cow milk)
- Lime juice to separate the curds
- Salt
The curds are pressed into blocks, then dried and aged for weeks until they harden. There are no fillers, no artificial preservatives and no rawhide.
Why dogs (and owners) like them
- Long-lasting: the dense texture means hours of chewing for most dogs.
- High in protein: it's cheese, so it's naturally protein-rich and relatively low in fat.
- Low in lactose: most of the lactose is removed during cheese-making, so most dogs digest it well.
- Low mess and low smell compared with many animal-based chews.
What to check before you buy
Not every "yak chew" is what it claims to be. Look for:
- A clear ingredient list. It should read like the traditional recipe above, and nothing else.
- The milk content. Many chews are a yak and cow milk blend, which is traditional and perfectly fine. A product labeled "100% yak milk" should list yak milk only.
- Where it's made. Authentic chhurpi comes from the Himalayan region.
- The right size for your dog. See our size guide.
Is a yak chew right for your dog?
For most healthy adult dogs who love to chew, yes. Skip them if your dog has a dairy allergy, and talk to your vet first if your dog has dental problems or a sensitive stomach.
